Why sleep is the most underrated recovery tool

Fitnes Team·June 3, 2026·1 min read

Muscle is not built in the gym. It is built while you recover from the gym.

What happens overnight

Growth hormone release peaks, the nervous system resets, and the micro-damage from training gets repaired. Cut the night short and you keep the stimulus but lose the adaptation.

How much

Seven to nine hours for most adults. If you train hard, treat the upper end as part of the programme, not a luxury.

Chronic short sleep raises perceived effort and lowers strength output measurably. The session feels harder for no extra benefit.

Three things that help

A consistent bedtime, a dark cool room, and no heavy training in the two hours before bed.
